John P. Kirwin, III, Founding Partner, co-founded Argosy in 1990 and is responsible for general fund administration, developing and assessing investment opportunities, providing strategic management support, and monitoring investments. He previously had a 14 year career as an attorney specializing in mergers, acquisitions, and corporate law. For nine years he was a Partner with McCausland, Keen & Buckman in Radnor, Pennsylvania, where he did extensive work on public and private securities offerings, as well as venture capital and buyout transactions. His experience encompasses a successful track record investing in over 90 companies and includes sourcing, reviewing, negotiating, performing due diligence, and monitoring various private investment transactions. Mr. Kirwin holds a Juris Doctris from the George Washington University National Law Center, and a Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of The Church Farm School and has previously served as a director on the Boards of four public companies.
Kirk B. Griswold, Founding Partner, co-founded Argosy in 1990 and is responsible for general fund administration, developing and assessing investment opportunities, providing strategic management support and monitoring investments. His experience encompasses a successful track record investing in over 90 companies. Previously he was a Manager and Consultant with Corporate Decisions, Inc. (now Mercer Management Consulting, Inc.), a Boston-based international management consulting firm. He managed client engagements, trained and managed Consultants and Associates, and worked with the CEO and Board of Directors of businesses in various industries. Mr. Griswold also has previous experience as President of a niche manufacturing company and as a manager and avionics engineer with the Integrated Logistics Support Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, with a dual major in Management and Finance, and a Bachelor of Science, Physics, from the University of Virginia. He has served as President of the Northeastern Regional Association of SBICs, on the board of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, Team Captain for the MS150 Bike Tour, and has been a guest lecturer for the Finance Department of the Wharton School. He has been a director or participated as a board observer on many of his investments.
Michael R. Bailey, Partner, joined Argosy in 1999 and is responsible for general fund administration, developing and assessing investment opportunities, providing strategic management support, and monitoring investments. His background includes commercial lending, business operating experience, and SBIC investing. Immediately prior to joining Argosy, Mr. Bailey was one of three principals in a building products distribution and contracting business. Previously, he was a Vice President of Corestates Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank) with responsibility for developing and managing relationships with middle market companies. He also had prior experience as one of two professionals at Meridian Capital Corp., an SBIC fund, with marketing and portfolio management responsibilities, as well as oversight of various limited partnership interests in private equity funds. He started his career as a credit analyst for Mellon Bank. Mr. Bailey earned an MBA at Drexel University and a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Bucknell University. He is a former board member and officer of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth, has served on the board of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, and is a founder and director of Community Backstop, a charitable organization. He has been a director or participated as a board observer on many of his investments.
John F. (“Jack”) Nugent, Partner, joined Argosy in 2002 and is responsible for developing and assessing investment opportunities, providing strategic management support and monitoring investments. Mr. Nugent worked in the Restructuring Group of the Investment Banking division at Lazard Frères & Co. in Manhattan, where he advised companies on the restructuring of their balance sheets and provided merger and sale advice. Prior to Lazard, Mr. Nugent worked in the Restructuring Group at Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown in Manhattan. Mr. Nugent began his career at Alex. Brown & Sons in Baltimore, Maryland where he worked in investment banking and focused on raising and executing equity and equity-linked transactions (IPOs, follow-on offerings, convertible debt offerings, convertible preferred offerings, etc). He also has experience working at GE Equity, the private equity arm of General Electric. Mr. Nugent earned his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a major in Finance from Loyola University Maryland. He received the Arnold F. Adams award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship from the Tuck School at Dartmouth.
Keven P. Shanahan, Partner, joined Argosy in 2004 and is responsible for developing and assessing investment opportunities, providing strategic management support, and monitoring investments. Prior to joining Argosy, Mr. Shanahan was an Assistant Vice President in the Financial Services and Healthcare Group of GE Equity, the private equity arm of General Electric in Stamford, Connecticut. He began his career at Furman Selz, a New York based investment bank that was later bought by ING, where he spent five years in the Healthcare Group working on mergers and acquisitions, public equity offerings, high yield debt offerings and private placements. Mr. Shanahan earned his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, where he graduated with Distinction and was an Edward Tuck Scholar. He earned his Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Harvard College.
Steven J. Morgenthal, Operating Partner, joined Argosy in 2007 and is responsible for evaluating potential investments, performing due diligence, and working with portfolio companies to grow shareholder value through improved strategic planning and operational effectiveness. Prior to joining Argosy, Mr. Morgenthal was a venture partner with SCP Private Equity Partners and was CEO and a board member for multiple SCP portfolio companies. Prior to his involvement with SCP, Mr. Morgenthal was a senior executive with a number of private and public companies, including Unified Systems Solutions, a diversified information technology firm that he co-founded, managed as COO, and successfully sold to Computer Horizons. He began his career with AT&T/Bell Labs, where he held a variety of marketing and project management positions. Mr. Morgenthal earned a Masters of Science from Stevens Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science from Pace University.
Donald Charlton, Operating Partner, joined Argosy in 2010 and is responsible for evaluating potential investments, performing due diligence, and working with portfolio companies to grow shareholder value. He has over 23 years experience as a C-Suite athlete for venture and private equity backed companies. Mr. Charlton was a founding management team member of InPhonic, the 2004 INC 500 #1 ranked fastest growing private company in the U.S., where the team raised $90 million in private equity and completed a $150 million IPO exit. InPhonic grew to $300 million in revenues and 700 employees in less than five years. Mr. Charlton has diverse industry experience spanning technology, software, manufacturing, ecommerce, Internet advertising/marketing, and professional services. He brings solid middle market buyout experience, having completed 14 acquisitions during his career. Mr. Charlton started his career with Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) and held management positions at Baxter Healthcare, Osage Venture Partners, InPhonic (now Simplexity), XM Satellite Radio, Gratis Internet and Venture Catalyst Consulting. Don earned his B.S. from the University of Scranton, an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and is a CPA.
Lane W. Wiggers, Operating Partner, joined Argosy in 2015 and is responsible for evaluating potential investments, performing due diligence, and working with portfolio companies to grow shareholder value. He has significant experience in the middle market, closing more than 30 acquisitions and associated capital raises since 2002. Prior to joining Argosy, Lane founded Cordam Group and was also a partner with CS Capital Partners. Both firms are early stage private equity investment firms, where he led all aspects of private equity sourcing, diligence and portfolio company engagement. Prior to joining CS Capital Partners, Lane was a Director with CD Ventures, a Philadelphia based private investment firm. Lane began his finance career as an investment banker in the Defense, Aerospace, and Technical Services (“DATS”) Group at Wachovia Securities/Wells Fargo where he focused on M&A advisory and public offerings. Prior to banking, Lane’s early career included operational, engineering and managerial roles with Rockwell International. He also held operational/engineering positions at Cooper Industries and Cummins Engine. Lane earned an undergraduate degree from Clemson University in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland where he was a Lamone Scholar.
John J. Broderick, Operating Partner, joined Argosy in 2016 and is responsible for evaluating potential investments, performing due diligence, and working with portfolio companies to grow shareholder value. John has over 25 years of experience as a manufacturing executive, the last ten years working with private equity backed companies in the lower middle market. His diverse experience and first-hand knowledge of best practices provide him the capacity to quickly assess the needs of a business and lead significant change in a variety of markets, organizations and environments. Prior to joining Argosy, John was Operating Partner at Argo Management Partners, a private equity group based in Chicago. In 2006, he created the Argo Business System, a set of tools developed by world class professionals and organizations, which has been deployed in several portfolio companies. Prior to Argo, John held leadership positions with Danaher Corp, Siemens and Sandvik, and was responsible for Sales, Finance, IT, Human Resources, R&D, Engineering, Project Management, Marketing, Customer Service and Operations. Mr. Broderick holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University, an MBA in Industrial Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University and post graduate degree from Seton Hall University in International Business.
Joshua T. Welk, Principal, joined Argosy in 2009 and is responsible for assessing investment opportunities, transaction execution and ongoing investment management support. Prior to joining Argosy, Mr. Welk began his career with the investment banking division of Susquehanna International Group where he was involved in M&A advisory, public and private equity offerings, and general advisory for clients in a wide range of industries. Additionally, Mr. Welk has experience with the investment banking division of Boenning & Scattergood. Mr. Welk holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in Business from Franklin & Marshall College.
Casey O’Rourke, Senior Associate – Business Development, joined Argosy in 2014 and is responsible for leading the firm’s business development and deal sourcing efforts. Prior to joining Argosy, Mr. O’Rourke was a Deal Origination Associate at CMF Associates, a firm offering deal origination, consulting and talent management services to middle-market private equity firms. While at CMF, Mr. O’Rourke was responsible for generating deal flow for CMF’s buy-side deal origination practice. Prior to CMF, he held positions with J.P. Morgan and Professional Transcription Services, where he gained experience in senior level sales.
Mr. O’Rourke holds his Bachelor of Arts degree in History at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a three year starter on the men’s lacrosse team. In his free time, he enjoys coaching lacrosse at the youth and collegiate levels in the Philadelphia area.
Matthew R. Erbe, Associate, joined Argosy in 2013 and is assisting in the evaluation of investment opportunities, performing company and industry due diligence, and portfolio analysis. Prior to joining Argosy, Mr. Erbe worked as an investment banking analyst for Eisen Fox and Company, LLC in Milwaukee, WI. There Mr. Erbe provided M&A and financial advisory services to lower middle market companies in a variety of industries. Mr. Erbe graduated in 2010 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in International Business.
Eric Warden, Senior Analyst, joined Argosy in 2017 and is responsible for the evaluation of potential investments, performing company and industry due diligence, and working with portfolio companies to grow shareholder value. Mr. Warden worked as an investment banking associate for Jefferies Finance, LLC in New York, NY. There Mr. Warden originated, underwrote, and structured debt financings on behalf of corporate clients and private equity firms to fund acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, dividend recapitalizations, and corporate financings in a wide range of industries. Mr. Warden graduated in 2014 from Fairfield University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance and Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting.
Molly M. McWilliams, Analyst, joined Argosy in 2017 and is assisting in the evaluation of investment opportunities, performing company and industry due diligence, and portfolio analysis. Prior to joining Argosy, Miss McWilliams worked as an investment banking analyst for Harris Williams & Co. There Miss McWilliams provided sell-side M&A advisory services to middle-market companies within the consumer industry. Miss McWilliams graduated in 2016 from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a Minor in Economics.
Richard C Schwenk, COO/CFO, joined Argosy in 2010 and is responsible for finance and operations. He has over 25 years experience as an executive for nine high growth, private equity backed operating companies. Mr. Schwenk raised over $750 million dollars in senior and subordinated debt and public and private equity to facilitate the formation and growth of these businesses. Many of these companies were conceived as business strategies and grew to several hundred million dollars in revenues through acquisition and organic growth. Mr. Schwenk performed business valuations, due diligence and business plans for more than thirty acquisitions. He significantly improved operating results during periods of high growth through business planning and analysis and financial and operating management. Several of these investments resulted in successful liquidity events through an initial public offering or sale to a larger private equity firm. Mr. Schwenk started his career at Arthur Andersen, LLP and holds an M.S. in Accounting from Kent State University and a B.S. in Business Administration from Drexel University.
Sarah M. Busch, Vice President of Investor Relations, joined Argosy Capital in April 2012 and is responsible for the investor relations program including brand management, fundraising, media relations and marketing communications to existing and potential investors. Prior to joining Argosy, Ms. Busch was a Director in the Investment Department of AXA Equitable, where she managed the private equity portfolio with over $1 billion in investments. Ms. Busch was responsible for due diligence on new fund investments, monitoring existing investments and managing partnership relationships. Prior to her promotion to Director, she was a senior credit analyst at AXA Equitable, where she performed analysis on new and challenged credit investments, CLOs and bridge loans. Ms. Busch earned an MBA in Quantitative Finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University. In 2009, she was awarded the Rising Star Award from the Women’s Bond Club.
Paul M. Grassinger, Vice President of Finance and Accounting, joined Argosy in 2016 and is responsible for finance, accounting and administration. He has over 15 years of experience as an executive. Mr. Grassinger has performed valuations, due-diligence, business plans and post-acquisition integrations for over two dozen successful transactions. He has been involved in raising over $250 million dollars in senior and subordinated debt. Mr. Grassinger has diverse industry experience spanning technology, software, ecommerce, Internet advertising/marketing and distribution. He started his professional career in the Audit and Assurance group at Ernst & Young, LLP and has served in leadership roles, including CFO, COO, Vice President and Corporate Controller. Mr. Grassinger earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting from Rowan University. He is an active CPA in Pennsylvania, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executive Group (GPSEG).
Melanie C. Lyren, Chief Compliance Officer & Vice President of Investor Reporting, joined Argosy in 2001 and is also responsible for investor reporting and SEC reporting and compliance. Prior to joining Argosy, Ms. Lyren was a Senior Accountant in the Enterprise Group of Arthur Andersen, LLP, where she planned and performed financial statement audits and business advisory services, managing client service teams and preparing SEC reports for companies across a broad range of industries. Ms. Lyren earned a Bachelor of Science, Economics with a major in Accounting from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Lyren is a CPA and a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Marlowe acts as General Counsel for Argosy Capital, providing oversight on legal and compliance matters for the firm. Mr. Marlowe is the managing partner of his suburban Philadelphia-based firm, Marlowe Legal Advisors, LLC, which provides corporate and securities legal advice, general counsel services, and specialty private investment fund services to its clients. Mr. Marlowe’s previous experience includes serving as general counsel, chief operating officer and chief compliance officer of Rock Hill Partners, LLC, a hedge fund, which focused on convertible arbitrage. Prior to Rock Hill, Mr. Marlowe was Vice President of Rose Glen Capital Group, Inc., a hedge fund, which focused on PIPE transactions. Before joining Rose Glen, Mr. Marlowe practiced law in the Business and Finance Department of Morgan Lewis & Bockius, LLP, where he represented hedge, private equity and venture capital funds in various transactions, including equity offerings and M&A, and advised clients on securities law and general corporate issues. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Marlowe practiced law at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, where he focused on securities law, M&A and general corporate work. He holds a Juris Doctor from The Dickinson School of Law and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Temple University.
